Michael A. Maines, 50, of Centralia passed away peacefully at his home on June 2, 2017.

He was born September 2, 1966 in Centralia, Illinois to Elijah Maines and Majoria Jefferson.

Michael was a decorated former Orphan. In 1984, Maines set a CHS football record of 47 pass receptions for 770 yards, and scored eight touchdowns. He was also the kicker, kickoff return man, and totaled 45 tackles as an outstanding defensive player. He went to Illinois State University on a football scholarship and received one varsity letter in 1986. Maines was also an accomplished all-around athlete. He was a member of the CHS 400 & 800-meter relay teams that took South Seven Conference and Sectional titles, and placed sixth at the State meet. Maines was also a starter for the 1984-85 Orphan basketball team.

He dedicated countless hours coaching local athletes, including junior high and high school girls’ basketball and softball, as well as football. He enjoyed spending time at family BBQs, singing, and thought he was the funniest man alive.
