John Bennett Charlton, 74, of Odin, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at home. John was born January 20, 1943, the son of John Sr. and Virginia (Tadlock) Charlton in Odin, Illinois. He married Neoma (Perkins) on June 27, 1965, in Odin, IL.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Neoma Charlton of Odin; devoted sons, John Charlton Jr. and special friend Shelby of Centralia, Joseph L. Charlton of Odin, Jacob E. Charlton and wife Tracy of Salem; doting daughter Amanda Bullard of Salem. Precious grandchildren, Kisten Swisher, Sierra Charlton, Cara Charlton, Catrina Charlton, Joseph Charlton, Richard Charlton, Jacob A. Charlton, Taylor Charlton, Austin Charlton, Olivia Bremer, Gabriel Charlton, Alaina Charlton; 6 cherished great-granddaughters; 2 valued great-grandsons; appreciated siblings, Sarah Karrick and husband Kenneth of Odin, Tommy Charlton and wife Dorothy of Junction City, Sally Green and husband Dan of Iuka, Robert Charlton and special friend Carol of Sandoval, Ginny Adams of Odin, Lois Beard and husband John of Odin, George Charlton and wife Pam of Alabama; many nieces and nephews.

John is preceded in death by both his parents, John Bennett Charlton and Virginia (Tadlock) Charlton; grandparents, John Bennett Charlton and wife Emily, Pearl and Blanche Tadlock; brother-in-law, Michael A. Adams, Raymond L. Wooden.

Mr. Charlton served our country in the United States Airforce for twenty-one years ranking as a Master Sargent. Vietnam War time was included in Mr. Charlton’s many years of service. John began his working career as a young boy in Sandoval working on cars for Jake Voss. He continued sharing his knowledge of motors in Centralia for Langenfeld Motors. Mr. Charlton then honored his country by joining the United States Airforce. Upon returning home from the Airforce John worked for Casey’s Transmission in Centralia. Mr. Charlton utilized his love for being outdoors through hunting. Catfish and salmon where the main fish John enjoyed fishing for. John’s vegetable gardening was one other way he connected to nature always ready to share the spoils of his garden. Mr. Charlton’s skill as a woodworker was enjoyed by many. John’s most treasured time was spent with his grandchildren.

Celebration of life services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Irvin Macz funeral home in Odin with Brother Claude Howell officiating. Burial will follow at Carrigan Cemetery with military rites being accorded by the Patoka American Legion Post #543. Friends and family are respectfully invited to visiting hours at the funeral home on Wednesday September 6, 2017, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
