Patricia Clara Nitz, 94, of Walnut Hill passed away Tuesday January 16, 2018 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. She was born on September 5, 1923, the daughter of Arthur G. Hocking and Anna (Neilsson) Hocking-Bewon in Highwood. She married Arthur F. “Art” Nitz on April 15, 1944 in Highwood, and he preceded her in death on March 25, 2010.

Patricia was a devoted mother to her children, Jerry Nitz and wife Lyndole of Centralia, Linda Rushing of Walnut Hill, Bill Nitz and wife Leslie of Centralia, Michelle Geiler and husband Curt of Trenton; treasured grandchildren, Brian Nitz and wife Amie, Laura Lutz and finacee Stephen, Jeff Rushing and wife Cheryl, James Rushing and wife Jamie, Amanda Rushing, LeAnn Nitz, Eric Nitz, Collin Geiler, Daniel Geiler, Megan Geiler, Saralynn Geiler; precious great-grandchildren, Jenna, Brooks, Zoie, Justyn, Katy, Alanah, Chase, Khloe, Jarett, Julianna; her caring sister-in-law, Leah Nitz of Greensburg, IN; special nieces, Pat Wilson and husband Ken and Cindy Brenner of TX.

Along with her parents, and her husband of 65 years, Art Nitz, Patricia was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Hocking; her sister, Marian Brookover; her great-grandson, Gavin Lutz.

Patricia was a caring lady who loved to give of her time by volunteering. Her first volunteer assignment involved assisting the soldiers during wartime for Illinois Bell Phone Company. It was during this time that Patricia met her future husband, Art. Patricia lived in this area since 1964 where she devoted her life to caring for others. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, volunteered as a Pink Lady at St. Mary’s Hospital, and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. Patricia will be remembered for her excellent seamstress work, her love of reading, crocheting, and playing bridge with her friends. She will be genuinely missed by all the people whose life she touched.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 21, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Centralia with Reverend Anita Munden officiating. Family and friends may call for visiting hours from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service on Sunday at the church. Memorial contributions in Patricia’s honor can be made to First United Methodist Church.
