Reverend Gary Lee Awalt, 74, of Rock Island, IL, formerly of Sandoval, IL, passed away Monday, April 30, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA. He was born on September 22, 1943 the son of Walter and Josephine Darnell in Evansville, IN. He married Linda Dial in September of 1967 in Odin, IL and she preceded him in death on January 16, 1994.

Gary was a devoted father to his surviving sons, Darin Awalt and wife Eileen of Carol Stream, IL, Kevin Awalt and wife Cami of Simpsonville, SC, Jason Awalt and wife Kim of East Moline, IL, and Eric Awalt and wife Courtney of East Moline, IL; loving grandfather to his precious grandchildren, Ashley, Brett, Emily, Brandon, Kaleb, Myah, Ashton, Sloane, Adreanna, Owen, Wyatt, Zachery, and Negan; also survived by his mother-in-law, Mildred Dial of Odin; and protective brother to his sibling, Ken Darnell of Palos Heights, IL.

Along with his wife of 26 years, Linda Awalt, Mr. Awalt was preceded in death by both his parents, Walter and Josephine Darnell.

Mr. Awalt was raised Sandoval, IL. He and his wife, Linda were partners in their Assembly of God ministry while serving in southern Illinois, southwest Missouri and northern Illinois. They moved to Aledo in February 1992 where they pastored at New Life Assembly of God. Gary also worked hard as a truck driver where he enjoyed the beauty of the countryside he traveled through. He had an interest in cars. Mr. Awalt was a true man of faith, honoring his Savior by attending church, revivals, and adoring Southern Gospel music. In more recent years Gary could be found going to the park, walking by the river, and searching for eagles. He will be fondly remembered as being a loving family man who was extremely proud of being a grandpa to his cherished grandchildren.

Celebration of life services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Odin with Ken Darnell officiating.
