Laura A Brooks, 92, of Centralia, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Centralia Manor. She was born on February 28, 1926 the daughter of Hollis and Rochelle (Inman) Baker in Salem. She married Gerald Thomas Brooks and 2 children were born of this union, they later divorced.

Survivors include her children, G. Douglas Brooks of Long Beach, CA, and Connie Scarborough and husband Ben of Centralia, IL; 4 grandchildren, Tammy Ramsey, Jeff West, Dena Brooks, and Penni Moniz; 9 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Laura was preceded in death by both her parents; sister, Dorothy Baker; infant brother Charles Baker; and daughter-in-law, Donna Brooks.

Laura attended Northern University in Terra Haute, IN, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, and received her bachelors and part of her masters at McKendree College in Lebanon. Laura was a teacher of 3rd and 6th grades and special education at Patoka School for 22 years. She also taught for 6 years in Bismark, IL. Laura was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a lifetime member of the National Education Association along with the Retired Teachers Association. She immensely enjoyed music and was a concert violinist at the age of 14. Laura was an avid sports fan, especially baseball and tennis. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Per her request, she will be cremated and there will be no visitation or funeral proceedings. Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia is in charge of arrangements. Memorials in Laura’s honor may be made to the CCBA Food Pantry and will be accepted at the funeral home.
