Graveside Service 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 20, 2018 - Carlyle City Cemetery, Carlyle

Martha C. Swagler, of Shattuc, 97, passed away Sunday October 14, 2018. Martha was born on July 16, 1921 in Cherry Valley, Arkansas to Ethel (Crisco) Payne and Joel Sidney Payne.

In her young life she worked in Indiana on early radar systems in support of the war effort. She was proud of the fact she was most proficient at soldering. She was called upon to help others to keep up with the demand. From there Martha worked in Downtown Chicago in the Palmolive Building as a teletype operator. It was there she met a handsome soldier, who would become her husband.

Martha married the love of her life, Lewis F. Swagler, after World War 2, on November 14, 1945. They returned to Lewis’ home in Shattuc where they farmed with her brother-in-law Edgar and wife Bonnell (who survives) to form what is now Swagler Bros. Farms, Inc. Martha and Lewis raised two sons on the farm, Steve and Terry. Martha was a supportive homemaker and farm wife which helped build the farm to what it is today.

Martha was also a very social and talented lady. She raised and arranged beautiful flower gardens and painted scenes from the farm. She was also known for her classy style and modeled for the Smart Shop in Centralia, for many years. Martha enjoyed social organizations including Sandoval Woman’s Club, Clinton County Homemakers Association, and others where her talents and energy were always appreciated. She and Lewis both were involved with the Shattuc United Methodist Church, where she taught generations of kids in Sunday School, and was always on hand to help the Youth Groups. Many have shared that her guidance influenced their lives.

She was a wonderful Wife, Mother, Mother-in-law, Grandma, Aunt, and friend to many. Her special love for children brightened her world to the end of her days.

Martha is survived by her son Terry Swagler and wife Debbie of Sandoval, daughter-in-law Margie Swagler of Shattuc; grandchildren, Jill Chambers of St. Louis, Jason Swagler and wife Erica of Alton, Rob Swagler and wife Melissa of Shattuc, Trent Swagler and wife Shanda of Salem and great grandchildren, Taylor Chambers, and Olivia, Iris, Sydney, Dexter, Jude, and Xada Swagler. Also survived by a special niece, Eunice Steffens of Mt. Vernon and many other nieces and nephews. Martha will also be missed by her dear friends who for over thirty years celebrated each other’s birthdays with many fun activities. The last few years of Martha’s life were shared with her special kitty, Maggie, who misses her dearly.

She was proceeded in death by husband Lewis on December 1, 2009, son Stephen on June 28, 1999, Parents, Siblings, and In-laws.

Graveside services will be conducted on Saturday October 20, 2018. Friends and Family may gather at 1 P.M. at the Carlyle City Cemetery with Rev. Cheryl Cain officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Shattuc United Methodist Church or Sandoval Fire Department.
