February 19, 2019

Virginia Irene Brewer, 99, a resident of Centralia Manor and formerly of The Manor at Salem Woods, died Feb. 19, 2019, at St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia.

She was born in Benld, Macoupin County, April 26, 1919, daughter of Charles and Mary Gallas. On May, 26, 1946 in Salem, she married Leslie "Red" Brewer. He died March 31, 1963.

Mrs. Brewer was also preceded in death by brother Charles Gallas of Odin; an infant brother, Carl; two sisters, Thelma Gallas of Sandoval and Lucille Calfas of San Francisco, Calif.

Nephews and nieces survive here and on the West Coast.

Irene's father died young and she and her siblings grew up in hard times on an old farm off Rt. 50, east of Sandoval. She lived most of her adult life in Salem. She loved Salem and treasured the friendships she maintained there through the years. Most of her life she worked in banking as a teller, including many years at the Community State Bank in Salem and at the Indiana State Bank in Speedway, Ind. She worked one year at bank in Mesa, Ariz.

Irene enjoyed cooking and dining. She relished visits to her brother's 10 acre vegetable garden in rural Odin where she shared in the bounty. She was a lifelong crafter and in later years could be found more often standing at her crafting table than sitting down in her chair.

Cremated remains will be interred at Paradise Cemetery in Salem alongside her husband. Day Macz Funeral Home in Sandoval is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences and memories of Irene may be shared with the family by visiting and/or on the funeral home’s Facebook page.
