Mrs. Barbara Ann Johnson, 76, of Walnut Hill, IL passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at Helia Healthcare of Salem surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 1, 1942 in Cottageville, SC, the daughter of Angus and Melissa (Brown) Ackerman. She married the love of her life, Garland Johnson in holy matrimony on December 27, 1967.

Her full and beautiful life will be forever cherished in the lives of her husband, children and loved ones. She is survived by her husband, Garland Johnson; devoted sons, Derek Johnson, Stadford Johnson, Kermit Johnson, Dexter Johnson, Rahsaan Johnson; beautiful daughters-in-law, Cheryl Johnson, Jackie Johnson; and her precious grandchildren, Derek Johnson II, Deryca Johnson, Desrae Johnson, Jasmine Nelson, AJ Johnson, Kaden Johnson, Dexter Johnson II, Easton Johnson, Maddoc Johnson, Carter Johnson, Bria Johnson, Tamera Johnson, Phoenix Johnson, Sabrena Johnson, Brady Johnson, Daniel Barnes, and great grandchild, Andre Johnson.

She is also survived by her loving siblings, Bernice Geddis of SC, Laury Ackerman and wife Annie of SC, Gloria Tenor of SC, Howard Angus Ackerman Jr. and wife Marie of MD, Amos Ackerman and wife Willamie of SC, Helen Jelloh of NC, Norris McDonald of NY, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by both her parents, Angus Sr. and Melissa Ackerman; sister, Katherine Hogan; 3 nephews; brothers-in-law, Henry Hogan, and Frank Samuel.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of Rick’s Chapel AME Zion and recently joined Second Missionary Baptist Church in Centralia. She worked as a Health Tech at Warren G. Murray Center for over 30 years before retiring as a Tech V Supervisor in Centralia. An avid learner and life-long student, she enjoyed attending college classes for anthropology, Spanish and sign language. Barbara was a fantastic cook and enjoyed treating her guests to a variety of delicious meals that she cooked and often prepared with vegetables that she grew in her own garden. She was the heart and soul of her family, and made many cherished memories with her loved ones. She loved family reunions, and frequently traveled long distances to visit family members, especially her family in South Carolina and Maryland.

Barbara was an animal lover, liked to travel, enjoyed the outdoors, taking long walks, and absolutely loved gardening. Her legacy of fun, compassion and faith will live on in all the lives she touched. Her family would like all to remember her words of wisdom, “Make sure you love yourself”.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Second Missionary Baptist Church in Centralia with Rev. Isaac Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. A visitation time will be held from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service at 1:00 P.M. Saturday at the church.
