Opal “Joan” Brake, 87, of Carlyle, formerly of Centralia passed peacefully away Friday, June 7, 2019 a Carlyle Health Care Center. She was born on March 13, 1932 the daughter of Nelson Sr. and Vera (Zinn) Arrowsmith in Carlyle at her parent’s home. She married her life’s love, Leonard Brake on March 19, 1950 at Carlyle Methodist Church and he preceded her in death.

Survivors include her beloved children, Connie Taylor (Charles) of Centralia, Deborah Lueking (William) of Hoffman, and Danny Brake (Gayann) of FifeLake, MI; treasured grandchildren, Steve Nattier, (Cathy), Greg Nattier (Sara), Stacy Nattier, (Stephaine), April Schoonover, (Andy), Brent Lueking, (Jessica), Ryan Lueking, (Kaci), Trevor Brake, (Rebecca), and Amber Keller; loved step-grandchildren, Nathan Taylor, (Ann), Seth Taylor (Amanda); caring siblings, Nelson Arrowsmith Jr. (Sue) of Carlyle, June Mueller of Wooster, OH; sister-in-law, Pat Brake of Clay City; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband, Leonard Brake, Mrs. Brake was preceded in death by both her parents; father-in law and mother-in-law, Raymond and Leta Brake; and step-mother-in-law, Pearl Brake; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Barb Brake, Edward and Ella Brake, Harold Brake, and William Mueller; great- granddaughter Calli Lueking.

Joan was a wonderful homemaker that loved to cook and share her dishes with all that would sit at her dinner table. She enjoyed the outdoors always working in her garden and watching it grow or fishing beside still waters. Joan’s furry companion, Dexter, her dog that she cherished was always by her side. She will be remembered for her love of family, a legacy that will definitely continue on in all the hearts of her loved ones.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at Day Macz Funeral Home in Sandoval with Pastor Joe Lecke officiating. Interment to follow at Deadmond Cemetery near Sandoval. A visitation time will be held from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home in Sandoval. Memorials may be made in Opal’s honor to Deadmond Cemetery, Trinity Lutheran Endowment Fund, Southern Illinois Hospice, or Alzheimer’s Association.
