Donald Raymond Shanafelt, 92, of Centralia passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. He was born on August 8, 1926 the son of Raymond and Edna Friedrich Shanafelt in Salem. He married Margie Faye Stater on June 15, 1947 and she preceded him in death.

Survivors include his devoted daughter, Susan Lynn Johnston and husband James of Joliet; 3 cherished granddaughters, Kristen Merriman and husband Jason, Kimberly Ann Pokrajac and husband Ron, Kelly Kohrt and husband Pete of Plainfield; precious great-grandchildren, Jacob, and Zachary Merriman, and McKenzie Pokrajac; and special nieces and nephews, Peggy Amason, Mary Lustig, Richard Wilkinson, and Michael McRill.

Along with his wife of 61 years, Margie, Mr. Shanafelt was preceded in death by son, Stephen Ray Shanafelt; daughter, Nancy Faye Shanafelt; daughter-in-law, Kathy Shanafelt; sister, Rosalie Wilkinson; and sister-in-law, Shirley McRill.

Mr. Shanafelt was a faithful and active member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Centralia, serving as deacon on the church board, Christian Youth Fellowship member and officer, and sponsor of the CYF. He began his journey with his savior when he was baptized on March 30, 1941. He was a graduate of Centralia Township High School Class of 1944. He was a member of the class reunion committees for his school. Donald also attended Kaskaskia College.

Mr. Shanafelt was a hard working farmer that enjoyed working the land and watching his crops grow. He farmed in Kell until his retirement in 1992. He also raised registered Polled Hereford Cattle and had shown them at several county fairs. Donald was the proud recipient of the Goodyear Conservation Award in 1982 from the Marion County Soil and Water Conservation District. He was a past president of the local Kiwanis Club, holding the office of Lt. Governor of the 32nd District of Illinois and Eastern Iowa Divisions in 1971. Donald was a member of Masonic Lodge 201 in Centralia, since 1974 and a 32nd degree Mason Scottish Rite Valley of Southern Illinois in Belleville. He was a member of the Centralia Elks Lodge #493 and served on the historical society/museum committee of Centralia as a guide. He was a member of Ainad Shrine Temple East St. Louis and a former member of DeMolay. Donald was a member and past president of the Centralia Shrine Club. He served as an aide to Shrine Potentate Wm. Piper in 1990. He was on the Marion County Board for 16 and ½ years until 1986 and had the honor of drawing the map when the board changed to districts. Donald drove a school bus and a charter bus for Wimberly Bus Service and later drove for Beck Bus in Mt. Vernon, driving charter and tour buses. For 32 years he especially loved driving the Kaskaskia College basketball and baseball teams.

Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia is honored to assist the family of Donald Shanafelt with arrangements. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 27 at the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Centralia with Rev. Paula Comper officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. A visitation will be held Friday from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Saturday. At 7:30 P.M. Centralia Elks Lodge 493 will be performing funeral honors. Masonic rites Centralia Lodge 201 Service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Friday with a Shriners walk through to follow the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Donald’s honor to First Christian Church Disciples of Christ living memorial fund, Shriners Hospital, or Masonic Temple – Centralia.
