Norma Jean Chambers, 91, of Peoria, formerly of Centralia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 1, 2019 at Liberty Village Manor Court in Peoria, IL.

Norma was born June 2, 1928 in Centralia, IL the only child of Paul and Irene (Izatt) Kaelin. She married Gerald Chambers on August 6, 1950 in Centralia, Illinois. She was preceded in death by both parents and her husband.

She is survived by her children, Lenora (Paul) Bright of Edwards, IL and Ken (Raina) Chambers of Santa Maria, California; her grandchildren, Nicholas (Lindsey) Bright of Dunlap, IL, Jessica Bright of Orlando, FL, and Emily Bright of Charlotte, NC, Lieutenant Erika Chambers of Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, and Elaina Chambers of Santa Maria, CA. She was also the great grandmother of two, Charlotte and Henry Bright of Dunlap.

Norma grew up and spent all but the last few years of her life in Centralia. She worked as a secretary at Murray Developmental Center in Centralia until 1980, as a secretary for the Assistant Warden at the Centralia Correctional Center and completed her career working in the personnel office at the Correctional Center.
Norma was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Centralia. She enjoyed her Sunday School class, Bible studies, and helping prepare church dinners. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels in retirement.

After retirement, Norma loved to travel with her friends. She would be planning her next trip as soon as she returned from the previous trip. Many of her trips revolved around visiting her children and grandchildren in the Peoria area, Colorado, and California. She was a lifetime passionate Cardinals baseball fan. She spent many springs following the Cardinals to Florida for spring training and enjoyed riding the Redbird Express to Busch Stadium to attend games. At the game while proudly wearing Cardinal colors, she would enjoy a cold beer, a hot dog, and settle in to complete the scorecard. Her favorite Cardinal of all time was Tommy Herr! Another passion was eating out, which she was always willing to do. She enjoyed Centralia restaurants such as the Green Grill, Pinkys, Pizza Man, and Meyers as well as an Olive Garden wherever she was traveling. And finally games…many hours were spent playing games or cards with friends usually after dining out.
The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the nurses and staff of Liberty Village Manor Court in Peoria and Transitions Hospice. Their compassion, love, and care were a blessing to Norma and her family in her final years.

Visitation will be on Friday, August 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., immediately followed by the funeral at the Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Centralia. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church in Centralia or Centralia’s Salvation Army. Online condolences and memories of Norma may be shared with the family by visiting and/or on the funeral home’s Facebook page.
