Evelyn Mae (Hill) Allen, 81, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Saturday, August 31, 2019 in Columbus, Ohio after a long illness. She departed this earth surrounded by loving family.

Evelyn was born on June 30, 1938 to the union of Portia D. Hill and Rufus H. Hill, Sr in Centralia, IL.

She was the eldest of six children. Evelyn was preceded in death by her brother Lawrence Hill, father Rufus H. Hill Sr, daughter Frenchelle R. Allen, mother Portia D. Hill and brother James L. Hill.

Left to cherish her precious memory are her children: Travis Allen, Jr. (Molly) of Dayton, Ohio; Debby Allen (Bob) of Columbus, Ohio; Tony Allen (Zera) of Columbus, Ohio, Veronica Patterson (Terry) of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico; Darryl Allen (Lisa) of Clayton, North Carolina and Dorothy Allen Bell (Jason) of St. Louis, Missouri , brothers Rufus Hill, Jr. (Delmar), Ed Hill, Sr. (Abby) and Fred Hill, Sr. all of Centralia; 16 grandchildren; lovely great grandchildren; her best friend of 70-plus years Betty Jackson of St. Louis, Missouri, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends.

Evelyn grew up in Centralia and attended the local school system. As a young girl growing up, she enjoyed climbing trees and shooting marbles with her brothers. Her athletic abilities led her to play volleyball at Centralia High School. Evelyn lived in Centralia until she married.

Evelyn lived in France for two years. Despite the unpredictable weather, she found pleasure in the shopping malls and cafes.

She later returned to her hometown and resided there until the early 90s. Evelyn was a devoted member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church and served on the usher board.
Evelyn truly enjoyed serving the Lord, socializing with friends, talking on the phone and spending valuable time with her devoted family and extended family.

In 1992, she moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to be near her daughter, Veronica Patterson. She joined a local church and was extremely active. In fact, she served in several social groups and as a nursery school teacher. While in Cincinnati, she took vacations, spent time with her children and extended family. She was also active at her local community center and made beautiful ceramics. Evelyn received the “Best Teacher” award from her community center.
Evelyn helped raise her grandson Jordan Patterson from infancy to adulthood. She took great pride and joy in this blessing. He is now a third-year medical student in the Cleveland, Ohio area.

At least once a year, she would visit her Centralia family. Her brothers Rufus, James, Ed and Fred Hill would treat her like royalty. She always looked forward to coming home.
Evelyn had a compassionate spirit. She never forgot a loved one’s birthday and found great joy in sending cards and letters. Her favorite scripture was Psalms 100: 1-2…”Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before his presence with singing.”

A visitation will be held Saturday, September 7, 2019 from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church (501 N. Sycamore St, Centralia, IL). A Celebration of Life Service will be held in her honor at 1:00 P.M., also at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Ronald Johnson officiating.
