William Lee “Bill” Wadkins, 87, of Centralia passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family Wednesday, December 25, 2019 at Centralia Manor in Centralia. He was born on February 29, 1932 the son of Otto and Lucy Belle (Williams) Wadkins in Patoka. He married his sweetheart, Shirley Phelps on January 3, 1955 in Mt. Vernon and she survives in Centralia.

Along with his loving wife of 64 years, Shirley Wadkins, survivors remain to share fond memories of Bill include his devoted daughters, Debby Eovoldi and husband Tony, and Barbara “LeAnn” Clark and husband Michael both of Centralia, and Mindy Piercy of Mt. Vernon; cherished grandchildren, Tony, Jennifer, Joshua, Matthew, Michael, Hannah, Ross, Andrew, and Molly; numerous precious great-grandchildren special sister, Margie Orrell of Patoka.

Mr. Wadkins was preceded in death by both his parents, Otto and Lucy Belle Wadkins; sister, Mary Clements; and grandson, Daniel Clark.

Mr. Wadkins was a member of Calvary Church in Mt. Vernon, where he was an Usher and, proud to serve his Lord and Savior. He understood the value of a good days work and worked happily for the Army Corps of Engineers in maintenance until his retirement. In his retirement, Bill enjoyed collecting AC tractors and refurbishing them back to their original glory.

Bill met his bride while they were at the roller rink in Centralia. He knew he wanted to get her attention and thought to literally sweep her off her feet to have her notice him. His plan worked famously and the couple shared 64 years of wedded bliss and Bill was given many special moments to sweep Shirley off her feet.

Bill was a humble family man and was always proud to devote time to growing strong relationships with his family. He had a special way of listening to others, allowing them a time to share anything that was on their minds, and offering his wisdom and comfort. He loved to put his family first and would always sacrifice his needs for others. Known as “Wild Bill” by his favorite people, Bill’s contagious smile, kindness and gentle presence will be deeply missed by all he knew and loved.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Sunday, December 29, 2019 at Calvary Church in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Steve Edwards officiating.
