Barbara Ann Steele, 90, of Odin passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia with her family by her side. She was born on March 20, 1929 the daughter of Henry and Ann (Woolbright) Tillman in Centralia. She married her sweetheart, Virgil Steele on October 29, 1949 in Centralia and he preceded her in death on May 4, 2003.

Survivors that will remember Barbara’s loving nature include her devoted children, Robert Steele and wife Sandy of Johnston City, Sharon Reed and husband Mike of Centralia, Vicki Steele of Odin, Jane Laffoon and husband Joe of Odin, David Steele and wife Mimi of Salem, Marcia Pearce and husband Gary of High Point, NC, Cindy Perkins and husband Tony of Odin, Ann O’Neil and husband Denny of Joliet; 37 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Tony Tillman and wife Carol of Portage, MI; sister, Mary “Miki” Holt and husband Bob of Harlingen, TX; sisters-in-law, Marlene Tillman of Lodi, CA, and Pat Tillman of Assumption, IL; brother-in-law, Carl Steele & wife Lula of Rockford; adopted daughter, Ruth Ann Black of AZ; beloved pet dog, Susie Q; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband of 53 years, Virgil Steele, Barbara was preceded in death by both her parents, Henry and Ann Tillman; sister, Patricia Wessling; brothers, Jim Tillman, and David Tillman; and son, Rick Steele.

Barbara brought a smile to many happy customers while working as a sales clerk at Sears in Centralia. She was very active in her children and grandchildren’s lives. Barbara never missed a sporting event where her kids or grandkids would be starring, making sure to cheer them on to victory. She was always available to volunteer for others in her community and served as a scout leader spreading her wisdom with many grateful children. Barbara made sure to spend time in the beauty of nature, going on campouts and sharing stories around the campfire. She loved to travel and have adventures on many road trips. She would check the map and say “It’s only this far away” holding her fingers only inches apart and then driving for many hours to discover hidden treasures. Barbara was a loyal, loving, and generous lady and her spirit of compassion will continue on in the lives of all her loved ones and friends.

Day Macz Funeral Home in Sandoval is assisting the family with arrangements. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, January 11, 2020 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Sandoval with Father Steve Pautler, Father Godfrey Mullen, and Father Pat Peter officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in rural Sandoval. Friends and relatives are welcome to a visitation time with the family from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Friday, January 10, 2020 at the church in Sandoval. Memorials may be made in Barbara’s honor to St. Judes Children’s Hospital or Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ in Donaldson, IN.
