Virginia M. Payne, 89, of Vernon passed away surrounded by her beloved family Friday, March 6, 2020 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia. She was born on July 30, 1930 the daughter of Everett and Eleanor Nell (Johnson) Wernsman in Vernon, IL. She married her best friend Vernon Charles Payne in October 22, of 1949 in Vernon.

Survivors that will carry treasured memories of Virginia include her devoted children, Crystal Payne of Forsyth, Kathy Burks and Tom of Franklin, TN, Mark Payne of Vernon, Jennifer Payne Sullens of Patoka; precious grandchildren, Joshua Beckmann, Lindsay Haake, Mark “Markie” Curtis Payne, Tyler Payne, Dawson Sullens, Dalaney Sullens; treasured great grandchildren, Alec Payne, Claire Payne, Lilly Ann Wehking, Oliver Haake; dear brother, Earl Wernsman, loving sister, Sue Brummet of TX and many special nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband of 46 years, Vernon Payne, Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by both her parents Everett and Eleanor Wernsman; daughter-in-law, Tammy Payne.

Virginia's greatest joy was loving the Lord and being an active member of the Patoka United Methodist Church and the President of the United Methodist Woman’s Club in Patoka. She was known for bringing her coconut cream, apple, and lemon meringue pies to all the funeral luncheons by request. Virginia was blessed with a beautiful voice which she shared with others as singing director at Vernon United Methodist Church and loved being active in vacation bible school. She made many memories and friendships in knitting club and Order of the Eastern Star. She raised her family while working as the Activity Director at Warren G. Murray Development Center. She will forever be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who treasured the time she spent with her family.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 9, 2020 at the United Methodist Church in Patoka. A visitation time will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Monday at the church in Patoka. Memorials may be made in Virginia’s honor to the family’s wishes to gift to Salem Woods in many ways for the care they gave to Virginia or the American Legion of Patoka Ladies’ Auxiliary.
