David M. Frimel, 86, of Odin, IL passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at Aperion Care in Fairfield, IL. He was born on June 24, 1933 the son of Albert and Mary Violet (Parmely) Frimel in Centralia, IL. He married the love of his life, Nancy Rippy on October 11, 1957 in Odin, IL and she survives in Odin, IL.

Along with his beloved wife of 62 years, Nancy Frimel, survivors include his devoted children, Michael Frimel and wife Kathy of Wichita, KS, and Mary Lu Minor and husband Allan of Odin, IL; cherished grandchildren, Kristen Larson and husband Nicholas of Odin, IL, Amanda Minor and fiancé Drew Furlong of Cookville, TN, Tyson Minor and special friend Karrigan Smith of Kinmundy, IL, and Will Frimel of Wichita, KS; precious great-grandchildren, Tinsley, Teagan, and Tatum Larson all of Odin; caring sister, Alice Brasel of Glen Carbon, IL; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and extended family.

Mr. Frimel was preceded in death by both his parents, Albert and Mary Violet Frimel; niece, Marsha Dewilde.

Mr. Frimel worked at Caldwell’s Ice House, Midwest Dairy, and started his apprenticeship at the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1953, he was drafted into the United States Army and was deployed to Germany. Mr. Frimel served his country with honor during the Korean War era. Upon returning state side, he worked as a dedicated employee for the Illinois Central Railroad, finishing his apprenticeship and working in the car shops until his retirement. He was a faithful member of Odin United Methodist Church where he helped raise money for Kids Coats at Christmas. David served as Chief of Odin’s Fire Department. He was a member of the Odin Masonic Lodge #503, ORDC, and Salem American Legion Post 128. David, a graduate of Odin High School Class of 1951, valued education and was proud to serve on the school’s board for 48 years. In 2013, David was given an award by the Illinois state School Board Association for becoming the longest seated board member of Illinois for all these years of service. Known for his love of the town of Odin, and it’s people, after retirement, David turned his interest toward preserving Odin History for the local library. Many people referred to David as the gentle giant, others nicknamed him “Satch” after a character in an old sitcom. He was a quick minded person, never at a loss for words and enjoyed sharing stories of the past. He always enjoyed helping people. David was an avid farmer in his prime, a lawnmower repairman, and always enjoyed flea markets and auctions. He was a loving and protective family man and loved to hear his grandchildren call out “Grandpa Dave”.

Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Odin, IL is privileged to be assisting the family of David Frimel with arrangements. A celebration of life service will be held privately and military rites will be accorded. Those in attendance are asked to abide by social distancing recommendations. Memorials may be made in David’s honor to Odin Methodist Church or Odin Fire Department and will be accepted at the funeral home at 234 S. Elm St. Centralia, Il 62801.
