Harold Dean Kell, 85, of Centralia passed away Friday, June 5, 2020 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. He was born on April 5, 1935 the son of James “Earl” and Bernice (True) Kell at his family’s home in Walnut Hill. He married Janet McNeil on December 7, 1963 in Walnut Hill and she survives in Centralia.

Along with his wife of 56 years, Janet Kell, Harold is survived by his children, Tina Boehne (Craig) of Hoffman, and Doug Kell (Kim) of Nashville; grandchildren, Caleb Boehne, Caroline Boehne, Ryan Kell, and Rachael Kell; and brother, David Kell of Centralia.

Mr. Kell was preceded in death by both his parents Earl and Bernice Kell; sister-in-law, Beverly Kell.

Mr. Kell served his country with honor in the 82nd Airborne of the United States Army from 1958 to 1960. Harold worked for Midwest Dairy Company. He later was proud to serve the people of the city of Centralia on the fire department for 28 years and worked his way up to Fire Marshal until his retirement. He was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ. He was a lifetime member of both the National Rifle Association and, the Centralia Elks Lodge #493. Harold had a great love for his country and was passionate about political news. He enjoyed time socializing with his buddies and watching Nascar races. He respected the beauty of nature and gladly shared his backyard with the birds and other wildlife that he fed from his porch. Harold held his role as Grandpa with the utmost importance. Known as the “Big Guy” to his granddaughters, Harold was always available to support his family in any way he could.

Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia is privileged to be assisting the family of Harold Kell with arrangements. A private graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park with military honors being accorded and Rev. Elaine Bush officiating. A visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. till 12:45P.M. Thursday, June 11 at the Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia where any that attend are encouraged to please wear their mask and will be limiting the amount of people into the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Christ Our Rock Lutheran High School and/or Southern Illinois Hospice and will be accepted for the family at the funeral home in Centralia.
