Edna Delores (Crabtree) Thompson, 86, of Centralia, passed away peacefully in her sleep Sunday, June 28, 2020 at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor. She was born on May 6, 1934 in rural Centralia, Washington County, IL, the daughter of Charles H. and Martha A. (Marcum) Crabtree. After her mother’s death when Edna was the age of 3, she was raised by her paternal aunt and uncle, August and Minerva (Crabtree) Hamburg on Dover Street in Wamac, IL. She lived there until the age of 26 when they both passed within two years of each other well into their 80s while her father raised her three older brothers nearby.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Del (Delores) Guymon and husband Tom of Mt. Vernon, IL and son, Michael W. Thompson of Illinois; cherished grandchildren, , Randa Walsh and husband David of Salem, IL, Stile Smith and wife Whitney of Taylorville, IL, Michael J. A. Thompson of Illinois, and Kelsey Thompson of Illinois; precious great-grandchildren, Mason Jones, Kallie Walsh, Hayva Smith, and Sawyer Smith.

She was preceded in death by both her parents; uncle and aunt; grandparents, Patrick and Mary (Price) Crabtree, Goldman and Martha (Mifflin) Marcum; brothers, Wilson Crabtree (Josiphine), Robert Crabtree (Doris), and Donald Crabtree (ex-wife Ann).

Edna graduated from Centralia Township High School in 1952 and worked in several offices in Centralia including Centralia Mutual Insurance Company, Mars Sales and Equipment Company, Hollywood Candy Company, and St. Mary’s Hospital Billing Office, and Green Thumb Employment and Training. Edna had a welcoming soul and opened her home to host Good News Club where the children of her neighborhood came to share in a bible study. She was inspired to write poems and enjoyed listening to the beauty of gospel music. Edna was a natural salesperson and modeled this talent to her children while taking them with her while selling for Avon and Watkins. She was a whizz at completing word searches and found satisfaction once one was complete. Edna lived the last five years at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor, where she and her roommate, Bette Frost, became very dear friends, with a lot of joy and laughter. Edna spoke with fondness of her devoted CNA’s, nurses, activity director, and all the caring staff who went above and beyond. She was a hardworking mother raising her children to value the importance of taking care of family first, and enjoyed the reward of being a doting Grandma.
