Mary Maxine Sturgeon, of Patoka, passed away surrounded by the love of her family, Sunday, July 5, 2020 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in O’Fallon. She was born on May 12, 1931 the daughter of Lenord “Abe” and Mary (Logue) Goodin in Patoka. She married Ira Sturgeon, Jr. on September 1, 1949.

Survivors that will remember the way Maxine cherished her family include her devoted children, Kathy Davino and husband Rick, Carol Moore and son-in-law, Brad Moore, Donald Sturgeon and wife Melissa, Karen Johnson and husband A.J., and Jeff Sturgeon and wife Robin; treasured grandchildren, Stephanie Houston and husband John, Melanie Burns, Ginger Davino and Matt Shaw, Shannon Moore, Jennifer Phillips, Stoney Sturgeon and wife Heather, Jana Sturgeon, Dennis Sturgeon and wife Jennifer, Bo Sturgeon and husband Jacob, Ryan Sturgeon and wife Dani, Joey Sturgeon, Steve Gans, and John Gans; precious great-grandchildren, John Anthony, Nickole, Taylor, Lindsey, Makenna, Rylan, Nicholas, Olivia, Noah, Malorie, Dawson, Trey, Alexis, Raegan, Kyndall, Ava, Austin, Emaly, Abigail, Zachary, Rebecca, Grayce, Jacob, Nicholas, Bailey, Hadley; prized great-great-grandchildren, Rowan, Lynnen, and Naviah; caring siblings, Merl Goodin and wife Doris, Nancy Dickman and husband Gary; kind sisters-in-law, Dorothy Leek, Darlene Goodin, Dona Goodin, and Lena Goodin; many nieces, nephews, and friends that were close to her heart.

Maxine was preceded in death by both her parents; siblings, Geneva Hicks, Irene Hoppe, Marcella Heather, John Goodin, Jim Goodin, Estel Goodin, David Goodin; and loved grandson, Nicholas Davino.

Maxine was proud to have supported her husband as a military wife for 23 years. She was an amazing wife and mother and instilled the value of working hard and giving your all. Maxine was a loyal employee of Wheaton Plastics in Centralia, retiring in 1993. She was an outstanding cook and baker, sharing mouth-watering homemade noodles, potato salad, Christmas candy, and jerky. Maxine nurtured her fruit trees and always had bumper crops of apples, and peaches, providing fresh taste for her delicious cobblers that everyone gratefully enjoyed. She will be remembered for her green thumb and the beautiful vegetable gardens she grew, making sure to can all the tasty flavors to be enjoyed. She was very creative and a talented quilter. Maxine loved playing Rummy with friends having a smile when she held the winning hand. Maxine’s joy was caring for her grandchildren and making memories with them at the river bottoms hunting for nuts. Maxine’s legacy of caring for family will live on in the hearts and actions of all she knew and loved.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 9, 2020 at Pratt Cemetery in Patoka. A visitation time will be held from 6-8:00p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at Day Macz Funeral Home in Patoka where the amount in attendance will be limited to 50 people at a time. Memorials may be made in Maxine’s honor to the Patoka Civic Center and/or Pratt Cemetery and will be accepted for the family at the funeral home.
