Roger Dean Sutherland, 84, of Walnut Hill passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2020. He was born on May 10, 1936 the son of David and Ruth (Schillings) Sutherland in Centralia. He married the love of his life, Doris Donoho on April 8, 1956 in Centralia and she survives him in Walnut Hill.

Along with his beloved wife, Doris Sutherland, survivors that will remember Roger’s warm smile include his kind sister, Esther Dekalb and husband John of Walnut Hill; special niece, Connie Bryant and husband Bobby; special nephew, Kevin Dekalb and wife Dawn; great-nephews, Chad Bryant and wife Michelle, Aaron Bryant and wife Ashley, Cody DeKalb, and Dustin DeKalb; great-niece, Jill Clifton and husband David; and several more great-nieces and great-nephews.

Roger was preceded in death by both his parents, David and Ruth Sutherland.

Mr. Sutherland was a proud Untied States Army Veteran serving during the Korean war era. Roger was a conscientious worker and started his career working at Ray Packing in Centralia for 13 years. He held the position as Chief of the Centralia Fire Department, where he gave his all to be at the ready for any fire emergency, for 34 years, until his retirement. Roger was extremely proud of, and active in his community serving as a member of the Noon Rotary Club, Paul Harris Fellow, Shriners, Centralia Masonic Lodge 201, and Elks Lodge 493. He led by example and was looked up to and mentored by countless people that will carry on so many of Roger’s amazing character traits. Roger was so in love with his wife Doris and doted on her, providing her every need. Their marriage was an image of true love, respect, and joyful times spent together. He was a loyal friend and colleague, had an easy way with others and always shared fond greetings and a smile with everyone. Roger led his life worthy of his calling to serve others. He had a huge heart, and truly treasured his family and friends. Roger led a wonderful, full life and those he knew and loved felt privileged to have known him, and grateful to him for showing them how to be the best they could be.

Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia is privileged to be assisting the family of Roger Sutherland with arrangements. A private celebration of life will be held Monday, January 4, 2021 at the Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia with Brother Claude Howell officiating. Roger will be honored by the Centralia Fire Department with a last alarm service and walk through. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in rural Sandoval where military rites will be accorded by the Centralia American Legion Post 446 and the VFW Post 2055. A visitation time will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home, where those in attendance will be asked to wear a mask and the number of people in the funeral home at one time will be limited. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Roger’s honor to the Centralia Fire Department or Hospice.
